Ashes, ashes...

After threatening to erupt for a couple months now, Mt. Redoubt finally blew earlier this week and has been erupting off and on since. The winds were finally in our favor this evening, (well not really, but you know what I mean) and we got a nice dusting of ash. The experts at the Alaska Volcano Observatory say Mt. Redoubt could continue to erupt for the next couple months! I am really not looking forward to more ashfall. Even though it does not sound or look dangerous, ash is actually tiny jagged pieces of rock and glass particles and is very abrasive. It can be harmful to electronic equipment and car engines and is dangerous to breath. Fun stuff, huh? Good thing we have a nice stash of face masks!

This is Tyler playing outside this afternoon. Check out the white snow (I REALLY wishing spring would make it to Alaska soon!).

This is what the sky looked like about 35 minutes later...

Check out the difference between the ashy snow and the white snow beneath it

So far we have only gotten a moderate dusting of ash, but the ashfall advisory is still in effect for another two hours and who knows what the future holds! Gotta love Alaska!
